Why is 3D cone beam computed tomography so important to the dental specialist?

Thursday, December 03, 2009

The most important advantage is that we can completely understand the patient’s anatomy prior to any procedures being performed. The guesswork that is present in relying on a panoramic x-ray for surgical planning is virtually eliminated. The “surprise” finding at surgery is rarely the case anymore. Not only do we get a better concept of the anatomy but also of existing conditions that may have gone unnoticed. This technology allows us to plan treatment as accurately as possible.

We actually perform a virtual surgery on the scan using a true to scale implant library so as to know what implant (size and system) is most appropriate. We no longer explain treatment using general terms but using an approach that by definition makes every case unique in our teams’ eyes. Of course, the greatest benefit is to you the patient. The more you know by seeing for yourself, the better your understanding of the individual circumstances that make your case so special.
