Whether you have one or a full set of teeth, losing a tooth can be very traumatic. Ask anyone who wears dentures, and they likely will be the first to proclaim the value of maintaining healthy teeth. Oh, what they would have, could have and should have done to maintain their original set of choppers.
Maintaining the health of your teeth should not begin and end with a toothbrush, and partial denture wearers know better than anyone. In fact, about 58 percent of partial denture wearers report that keeping their existing teeth in tip-top shape is more important than their diet or skin.
Unfortunately, bad habits are hard to break, at least according to a new national survey recently released by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, which found that more than one third – or 36 percent – of all respondents did not change any of their behaviors within the first year of wearing partial dentures. What these wearers of false teeth fail to understand is that a perfectly fit tooth on either side of a partial denture is twice as likely to be lost compared to others.
Partial dentures impact many dimensions of a person’s life including appearance, relationships and confidence. More than half of respondents to the survey said that their confidence and self-esteem had been negatively impacted by wearing a partial denture. Yet, many partial denture wearers still do not know that taking proper care of their false teeth is a big step toward preserving a healthy smile. That, in and of itself, is the problem with dentures, and what makes an alternative procedure that much more attractive for those missing teeth.
The procedure, called “Same-Day,” is not to be confused with partial or full-removal dentures. There are no messy adhesives involved, no removal of teeth at night, no slipping or loose dentures while speaking and you can eat all the foods you enjoy without the lingering effects of bad breath.
Same-Day eliminates a lot of the work involved with partial dentures, leaving more time to play. That’s because Same-Day dental implants can be brushed and cleaned like natural teeth. Plus, Same-Day implants eliminate the constant gagging reflex and will not create discomfort by pressing down on your sore, inflamed gums like dentures do.
How’s It Work?
Same-Day is designed for patients who are missing all of their teeth or are about to. The procedure utilizes four titanium screws – or dental implants – that are strategically inserted at angles that best make use of the remaining healthy bone in the jaw. Then a prosthetic dental bridge is attached to the titanium implants.
When the procedure is finished, you are left with a new set of teeth that look and feel natural, all in a few hours of surgery. In most cases, patients can return home in one day and yet they reap the benefits of a smile that, if cared for properly, can last for decades.
The sad truth is that most Americans with partial dentures believe that future tooth loss is inevitable — not preventable – and the possibility they might lose more teeth has made them at least a little nervous about visiting a dentist.
