When your teeth start showing visible signs of damage or decay, it doesn’t just affect your oral health, it can affect your confidence as well. Our teeth are a big part of our identities. If your teeth have experienced severe deterioration, you may not know how to get your confidence and beautiful smile back. The good news is that it is now easier than ever to regain your smile with dental implants.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are permanent replacements for natural teeth. They consist of screws (typically made of titanium) which are anchored into the maxillary or mandibular bone to serve as a replacement tooth root. The implants are then topped with porcelain crowns which mimic the look of natural teeth and restore chewing function.
Implants are generally a better option than dentures for full teeth replacement for several reasons. First, implants never need to be replaced, unlike dentures. Implants replace the roots of your missing teeth, which helps to prevent bone loss and facial collapse, which often occurs over time when dentures are used. Finally, they are just more comfortable and natural than dentures. They are not removed for cleaning, and they won’t slip and slide when chewing or talking. Implants look just like natural teeth, which helps many patients regain their confidence.
While some patients will need to wait several months after their initial appointment to receive their custom-made crowns, many full-teeth replacement patients can come into the office in the morning and leave the same day with a beautiful set of new teeth. How? Traditional dental implants replace each tooth individually with metal implants, and the crowns must be custom-made to match the missing tooth or teeth. However, in the case of full teeth replacement, an implant-supported full bridge or denture is often put into place. Instead of requiring every tooth to have its own implant, the replacement teeth are secured with just 4 implants in the top arch and 4 implants in the lower arch. This allows all of the teeth to be attached in two pieces (upper and lower), which is an extremely convenient option for eligible patients. This is known as the All-on-4 dental implant system.
Live Your Life
The most significant benefit of dental implants isn’t that you’ll make a good first impression. It’s that you’ll get to move on and live your life normally, without embarrassment or discomfort. Full teeth replacement allows you to have the confidence you need in social situations and enjoy your favorite foods without worrying. You’ll be able to clean and care for your new teeth just as you did with your natural teeth. No one should be able to tell that your implants aren’t your normal teeth—and you just might forget that yourself from time to time.
Talk to an Expert
If you think you might be a good candidate for full teeth replacement or need an individual implant, then it’s important you talk to an expert about your options. For many patients with severely damaged teeth, periodontal disease (gum disease) is an ongoing issue. You may need to undergo treatment for this issue before implants can be placed. Some patients also need a bone grafting procedure in order to anchor the implants properly.
