There is no substitute for seeing your dentist and periodontist regularly. This remains the best way to ensure you have healthy teeth and gums. There are technological advancements that make dental visits easier than ever and even help boost your oral hygiene in between dental visits.
Smartphones and Toothbrushes
Thomas Serval, a former employee of both Google and Microsoft, came up with an electronic toothbrush, the Kolibree, that connects to a smartphone. While you brush, the app on your smartphone tracks your progress and pinpoints areas you are missing or not brushing for long enough. It also times your brushing to make sure you are devoting the full two minutes to brushing, and tracks when you are brushing a specific area for too long. The app then offers tips on how to improve your brushing routine.
The concept for this new toothbrush came when Serval learned his daughter had gum disease. He wanted a way to monitor how well he and his children were brushing. With the help of Matthieu Delporte and Loic Cessot, the Kolibree came to fruition and is due to hit the market in 2014.
LANAP® Gum Therapy
While not brand new, not every periodontist offers LANAP® laser gum therapy yet. If you can find a periodontist who does, you’re lucky! LANAP®, approved by the FDA in the early 2000s, uses a laser to remove bacteria from pockets that form between the teeth and gums. Once the bacteria are gone, the areas affected by gum disease are then treated with the laser, the tartar on the tooth surface is removed using the laser and ultrasonic waves, and then the gum and tooth surface reattach.
The laser technology eliminates the need for tissue grafts or surgical incisions. As a result, healing times are faster, and the entire process and recovery involve little discomfort.
In cases where a tooth or teeth cannot be saved, implants, bridges, or dentures are all options for replacing missing teeth. NobleActive placed its first Same-Day implant in 2008 and then proceeded to place other implants in a total of 165 patients. The company monitored results for the next 29 months. By the end of the study, the survival rate for the Same-Day implants was 100 percent in the mandible and 99.3 percent in the maxilla.
Same-Day implants allow periodontists to place an entire arch of teeth on just four permanent implants. The metal implants are placed in the jawbone, and the teeth are attached the same day. In just a few hours, you have a full mouth of healthy-looking teeth and do not have to return for multiple appointments or bone grafting.
