FAQs

Does your periodontal office also offer x-rays and dental cleanings?

Yes! Although our doctors are specialists in periodontal disease and implant dentistry, our professional and experienced hygienists offer dental cleanings as well as routine x-rays. Remember, your first visit to our office is always complimentary! Please visit our dental hygiene page to learn more about cleanings.

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal diseases are painless bacterial infections of the gums, which “quietly” destroy the bone and gum that surrounds and supports your teeth. If left untreated, it could lead to teeth loosening and falling out.

Who Needs a Periodontist?

We treat people from all walks of life because periodontal diseases are far more common than the common cold. 90% of adults and 30% of children have some form of periodontal disease. You are far more likely to lose your teeth to periodontal diseases than from cavities. In fact, periodontal diseases accounts for fully 60% of all adult tooth extractions. Fortunately, most periodontal diseases are preventable and treatable if recognized on time.

Surprisingly, research by the American Academy of Periodontology suggests that 80% of the population report that they never had gum disease, although 72% of these respondents noted one or more symptoms. In addition, 70% of this population erroneously believes that it is “not very likely” or “not at all likely” that they will lose their teeth and need to wear dentures.

Are there any symptoms?

You may have gum or periodontal disease and not have any signs. Most people don’t feel any pain even though they have the disease. You should be examined immediately if you notice any of the following possible signs:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Sensitive or painful teeth

Can it be inherited from my parents?

Yes. Despite excellent home care, 30% of the population has up to six times more chances of developing the disease because they genetically inherit the susceptibility from their parents. Our practice offers oral DNA testing for periodontal disease to help patients determine the likelihood of gum disease.

Can I pass my periodontal disease to others?

Yes. New research findings using DNA testing have conclusively proven the transmissibility of periodontal disease producing bacteria and dental decay producing bacteria from spouse to spouse and among family members. Therefore it is highly recommended that if one family member has the disease that all family members should be examined. The benefit of this is the reassurance that you are not “At Risk” for possible periodontal disease producing bacteria transmission, and periodontal disease reinfection after treatment.

Has periodontal disease been linked to other serious medical problems?

Yes. Heart attack, stroke, diabetes, pneumonia, premature birth, and infections involving heart valves and artificial joints are just some of the serious medical problems that can be caused by periodontal disease if neglected.

Will dental insurance cover my treatments?

Most insurance plans cover most of the costs associated with treating periodontal disease. Dental insurance is meant to help you, but will not pay for everything. Your insurance company may cover from 25% to 65% of the fees, but it may not specify certain allowances, annual maximums, or limitations.
